Additional Info: Past & current experience
As Course Manager for Vocational ICT studies, I undertook to manage the final year of level 2 GNVQ in ICT, level 3 e-Business and level 3 Applied ICT, the latter two being regarded as failing within this college, with poor first-year results and poor progression to second year. As a direct result of my management, the second year attrition was reduced to zero for both subjects with a better than expected success rate. The GNVQ course closed with minimal attrition and maximum success. At the same time I undertook the management of the new IT Practitioners in ICT Award with a plan to extend that to IT Practitioners in IT & Business Certificate. My management provided the department with excellent Award results, minimal attrition and what was regarded as good progression to Certificate. First-time NSS was also a feature of the year, followed in 2008-2009 with the same results. As a direct result, the Vocational ICT programme was removed from the college At-Risk list, and the current ITP cohort exhibited no attrition and 100% pass. Progression to Certificate is considered to be good and prospects for the Certificate students looks encouraging. My Vocational team worked well under my management to keep students and achieve good results.

In my role as Deputy Head of Section, I was responsible for the Vocational ICT programme and the staffing, which included staff selection and recruitment and with staff appraisals and identifying training needs and requests. My staff would agree that we acted as a cohesive team, supporting each other and the students I was responsible for. A part of the role included detailing and providing for pastoral support as well as subject teaching and also providing the resources required for subject support for students. I was responsible for the budget assigned to the Vocational ICT part of the ICT & Computing section, for attending Section Heads' meetings and holding team meetings with my section staff. My staff comprised 5 teachers, who also worked in other sections or departments and who also assisted in providing Parents' Evening and Open Evening attendance. In this role, I was also responsible for student advice and guidance, recruiting appropriate students and providing longer-term support and guidance, including careers and HE.

As Assistant Senior Tutor, as a member of the pastoral team, I was responsible for a small team of Personal Tutors delivering, alongside their teaching, the pastoral programme that I was involved in creating and developing for student enrichment and progress guidance. Part of this involved student recruitment which meant having a good knowledge of all programmes offered by the college.

During my time in industry, as International Marketing Manager my team included 5 internal staff and more than 30 international contacts who required training and general management. I was responsible for a multi million pound revenue & expenditure budget.

Knowledge & subject experience
I am a qualified engineer with electronic engineering as my main focus and spent much of my time prior to entering education as a design engineer and in marketing and training. The equipment I was mostly associated with were both mainframe and mini-computers and with programmable automatic test equipment, thus providing me with an excellent knowledge of ICT systems and applications.

Having been involved in FE, I have developed my IT skills to be able to teach all relevent aspects of ICT applications, including all Microsoft Office applications (now with Office 2007) and other applications, such as Macromedia suite. This has been done either as bespoke subject-related training or as an investigative self-learn procedure, but mainly as a combination of both. My engineering background has given me the opportunity to keep, mainly, up-to-date with hardware and enabled me to teach this aspect of the programmes as well.

As an experienced teacher, I have needed to produce high quality assignment briefs for students, based closely on the award criteria and providing ample opportunities for diversity enabling students to reach, and extend beyond, their nominal learning capacity. I have worked in concert with colleagues on assessment techniques and with Internal Verification of both assignment briefs and IV of assessed work. As Course Manager I have attended a number of Awarding Body training sessions, both from a management and a subject viewpoint thus enabling me to provide appropriate guidance to staff and to create a good working association with External Verifiers and Moderators.

I spend time, when available, investigating my subject area to try to understand more about the application of ICT within industry and commerce thus enabling me to expand my personal knowledge to the long term benefit of students.
