Additional Info: Would you believe that I first really learned how to learn while in graduate school pursuing a doctoral degree while preparing for the last exam I have ever taken in an academic setting? It's true. And the experience completely motivated me to learn how to teach others how to learn!

Here's the back story: Somehow I had been able to succeed enough (or so I thought) up that point with my natural talent and motivation for succeeding (and a second attempt at the previous year's annual exam). But facing that comprehensive six-hour exam, in which I would have to recall the significant facts from a collection 150 research papers that had been covered in six graduate courses over the previous academic year, I was under the gun to do well enough to not repeat failing that year's annual exam. In other words, a number of the faculty who would grading this exam fully expected me to fail it the first time around, and I did NOT want to repeat that performance!

Seeing me completely stressed out over the matter, a fellow classmate of mine gave me some advice on what he did to be so successful (he was the best student at that time in our program). As I fully expected that the methods I had previously tried would fail me in tackling this exam, I gave his method a try as I didn't have must to lose. And because I had failed the first attempt at the previous year's annual exam, I felt

The result? Not only did I surprise those professors by passing that exam the first time attempting it, they were amazed as how well I had done so. Only one of my fellow students that year (the one who coached me on how to study) had come close to my performance on that exam. And while other students may have answered individual questions, none had done as well on ALL of the questions.

But more importantly, my experience while taking that exam convinced me that there are ways to learn that are significantly more effective than others. And that the key to learning HOW to learn for most of us is learning HOW to use those techniques.

Since then, I have explored learning about learn--and learning about how our brains work--and have concluded that the MOST important thing a student can learn is HOW to learn a particular subject. And while I can tutor you or your child on particular subjects, my special talent is working with someone to figure out what is keeping them effectively learning the material on their own. And when I have informally taught people these methods, they have responded that my coaching dramatically increased their enjoyment of learning a particular subject! And we all know how important enjoying something is success at ANY endeavor.

While I cannot guarantee that my clients will become learning "junkies" like I am, I do believe that this particular of tutoring method--as well as keen communication skills to identify and coach a tutee past significant learning blockages--allows me to effectively tutor on a multitude of topics. Because as many people have told me, "Chris, you know an awful lot about about a LOT of subjects!"

With that said, here is my formal education and professional education experience:
B.S. Bus. Admin./Finance with honors, University of Arizona
M.B.A. Bus. Admin/Finance, University of Rochester
Ph.D. Bus. Admin/Finance, Arizona State University
Visiting Professor of Finance, Cornell University (3 years)
Assistant Professor of Finance, Rowan University (4 years)

I have also have over seven years experience in business/corporate settings, and have published research in scholarly business/finance journals. But more importantly, I developed a personal mission statement somewhere during my professional career that I summarize as follows: to help others be as successful as they can be. And that is what I will bring in my service as a tutor if you choose to hire me.

Be well in your decision on this matter whatever you decide!
