Additional Info: My name is Joseph Rahimzadeh, and I am 23 years old. As of May 2011 I will have a degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from SUNY Cortland in Central New York. My ultimate goal is to earn a Master's degree in secondary education (7-12), and eventually a Doctor of Education degree after establishing myself as an educator. I am currently a volunteer assistant coach for the youth wrestling program in Nanuet, and have been for the last 8 years, so I have experience in working with children ages 7-14. My aim is to not only help young people learn and remember facts and concepts, but to also guide the thought process of the developing mind to create a strong critical thinking and problem solving foundation.

In high school I was a 3 sport athlete and the captain of the soccer and wrestling teams. I am now the vice president of the SUNY Cortland club baseball team. I have volunteered at elementary schools in the Cortland area, where I taught kindergarten aged students different games played all over the world, exposing them to not only recreation but also helping build a foundation in multicultural tolerance. I recently spent 2 weeks in Belize, Central America completing a course in marine biology under the tutelage of Cornell Alumnus Dr. Brian Rivest. This trip expanded my understanding of the natural world, and our interactions with it. I learned and saw things on the trip that cannot be learned from the pages of a textbook.

I have found that tutoring is not only about reciting memorized facts and figures, but also about communicating ideas and information to peers and teachers. A one-on-one forum allows for students to have open lines of communication with the tutor, which in turn reinforces what they have learned. A tutoring program with the right person allows the student to get the attention that a teacher cannot give in a conventional classroom setting. It is this extra attention and personal learning environment that really fosters mental sharpness and academic/social growth.
